Origin of eiderdown
Eiderdown is one of the most exclusive and valuable raw materials in the world. This down is not obtained from farmed animals but collected after wild eider ducks have left their nests.
The eiderdown processed at Schlossberg comes from a small Icelandic island. Every spring, eider ducks breed there in the windy, harsh climate of the Nordic Sea. To protect their small eggs, the females line their nests with down. After the little eider ducks hatch, the families migrate back to the sea and spend most of their time on the water. The valuable down is then collected by specialized eider farmers using pure craftsmanship. It takes up to 60 nests to obtain 1 kg of pure eider down.
Properties of eiderdown
Excellent temperature regulation
Eiderdown is extremely light yet exceptionally warm. Its fine branches interlock to form an airy structure that optimally retains heat. This provides excellent insulation and keeps the body temperature pleasantly constant.
Lightness
Despite their high thermal performance, eiderdown feathers are incredibly light. This makes them the perfect filling material for luxurious blankets that need to be comfortable and highly functional without being heavy.
Breathability
Eiderdown is not only warm, but also very breathable. It regulates body temperature by wicking away excess moisture, ensuring a comfortable sleeping environment.
Durability
A special feature of eiderdown is its ability to spread out again after being compressed. This property ensures that the volume and loft are retained even after prolonged use. Due to its durable structure, it maintains its insulating properties for many years, meaning that products containing eiderdown can be used for a long time and continue to provide enjoyment.
Sustainability and ethics
Since the eiderdown is collected from abandoned nests of wild animals, the process is particularly sustainable and animal friendly. In Iceland, specialized eider farmers protect the breeding grounds and harvest the down responsibly.
